From the Serenity of Japandi to the Luxury of Maximalism: Technologies that Respect Space
In recent years, the Japandi style – a blend of Scandinavian functionality and Japanese design philosophy (minimalism, Wabi-Sabi, harmony with nature, and Zen calmness) – has become extremely sought-after in premium interiors. This philosophy demands visual purity and breathing space. Every unnecessary plastic switch or blinking screen on the wall creates “visual noise” that instantly shatters the Zen feeling of the room.
On the other hand, we are witnessing a strong return to Maximalism – bold colors, rich textures, expressive wallpapers, and an abundance of artworks. Here, too, standard technologies have no place. How do we achieve this using the world’s leading building automation standard, KNX?
1. All “Brains” and Technical Equipment Reside in the Distribution Cabinet
The main difference between a simple house and a professional KNX system is the invisibility of the technologies. In standard systems, switches, technological equipment, and thermostats come in various, mismatched designs and are often visually unappealing. Color choices are also limited, often only white with a black-and-white or blue outdated screen.
In a KNX system, the architecture is completely different. All power relays (actuators), transformers, and processors are located in the technical room (distribution cabinet). Only an elegant interface (a switch or screen) makes it to the walls of the living space. There are no technical nodes in the room to distort the interior. The specifics of the cable installation allow them to be installed in such a way that the walls remain completely free of hidden cable “spider webs”. From now on, paintings can be hung on the walls wherever you want, not just where the wires allow.
2. One Switch Instead of Six (Materials that Blend with Design)
Imagine a living room. In a traditional installation, you would need: a switch for the chandelier, a switch for the LED strip, a remote for the air conditioner, a thermostat for the underfloor heating, and a couple more switches for the electric blinds. This creates a whole “keyboard” on the wall, destroying any architectural vision.
We replace all of this with a single exclusive KNX panel. Thanks to the premium brands we represent, such as Moorgen, Ekinex, and Tyba Home, the switch is no longer just a functional element; it becomes a design object and a statement of your personal style. Switches can be placed on a coffee table, hidden in furniture, etc.
- Diversity of Materials: Steel, brushed aluminum, gold, silver, bronze, wood, leather, or even real marble and stone. The switch can be perfectly matched to the wall finish, blending it with nature (Japandi) or highlighting it as an accent (Maximalism).
- Minimalism: Simple touch areas or elegant push-buttons that activate a “Movie Night” or “Dinner” scenario with a single click, simultaneously adjusting the lighting, blinds, and climate.
3. Sensors and Motorized Lighting
Motion, presence, temperature, and humidity sensors are mandatory for the house to operate automatically, but they do not have to ruin the design of the ceilings or walls.
- Motorized Recessed Lights and Track Systems: Smart lighting allows designers to play with the space. We use motorized track lights that, upon a KNX command, quietly move along the track, rotate, and illuminate the exact piece of art or furniture that needs to be highlighted at that moment.
- Invisible Temperature Sensors: Visually, there are no “boxes” with degrees on the wall. All sensors that read data are integrated into the switches. If a completely new switch needs to be manufactured according to an interior designer’s sketch, the sensors are perfectly hidden behind it.
- Miniature Presence Sensors: They are only the size of a coin and are color-matched to the ceiling. They can also be inconspicuously embedded into walls or furniture.
4. Live and Invisible Audio System (Invisible Speakers)
How do you get world-class sound (Multiroom) without ruining the interior with massive standard speakers in the ceilings? The solution is invisible acoustics.
We install special speakers that are integrated directly into the drywall wall or ceiling before painting and plastering. When the wall is finished and painted, it looks like a completely normal, smooth wall. However, the entire wall acts as a large acoustic membrane, creating an impressive, spatial, and top-tier sound. Guests will wonder where the music in the room is coming from! Sound quality does not change as you move around the room. The sound can also be brought outside, integrated into lighting bollards.
